The President’s Challenge is the premier program of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition administered
through a co-sponsorship agreement with the Amateur Athletic Union.
The President’s Challenge helps people of all ages and abilities
increase their physical activity and improve their fitness through
research-based information, easy-to-use tools, and friendly motivation.Since our founding as a fitness test for youth in the 1960s, we’ve grown to include these challenges:
- The new health-based assessment from the Presidential Youth Fitness Program will replace the Physical Fitness Test in the 2013–2014 school year. And it’s available for implementation now!
- The Physical Fitness Test measures the physical fitness of kids and teens.
- The Adult Fitness Test measures an adult’s aerobic fitness, muscular strength, flexibility, and other aspects of health-related fitness.
- The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) challenge is for people who want to make physical activity and healthy eating part of their everyday lives.
- The Presidential Champions challenge is for people who want to be more active more often.

It’s hard to meet your physical activity goals if you’re spending too much time in front of the television or computer. Sadly, the average kid spends more time watching TV than running and playing—but you are not the average kid! Adults, too, need to think about how much time they are spending in front of a screen.
- Quiet time for reading and homework is fine, but you should limit time spent watching TV, playing sedentary video games, or surfing the web so you have more time to play!
- If you’re going to watch TV or play computer games, break it up! Take advantage of commercials or pause the game for exercise breaks like jumping jacks, racing up and down the stairs, or doing some push-ups or sit-ups.
- Keep the TV off during mealtime and homework time.
- Keep TVs out of bedrooms.
